Lou Drago
Somatic Listening Workshop
Tararua Tramping Club
Saturday 21 June
2pm
June 21 marks the winter solstice, the final day of Lōemis festival, and also the final day of Lou Drago’s month-long Wellington residency.
For this workshop, Lou will begin by introducing ideas around listening as a tool for accessing presence and why we might wish to cultivate this skill, before diving in to some practical exercises to engage the whole body as a listening organ. We would then put this into practice during a deep-listening walk around the town belt, followed by a brief conversation and cup of tea back at the tramping club.
Please dress warmly and wear comfortable footwear, the walk may be 45-60 mins in duration. In case of bad weather this may be shortened, or we’ll stay inside.
Background
Lou believes it is fundamental to get into right relationship with listening. This includes listening to each other, to our bodies, to our planet and to the more- and other-than-human entities. Composer and musician Pauline Oliveros offered us the helpful distinction between hearing — the usual functioning of the ear, and listening — paying conscious attention to what is heard.
Lou’s visit is made possible thanks to the Goethe-Institut New Zealand and Wellington City Council
